If you think you may benefit from a walking stick but aren't sure where to start with measuring yourself for one or even how to use one to make the most of it, our Occupational Therapist, Sharon, is on hand to help.
For this you will need a tape measure, a helper to take your measurement, and the shoes you’ll be wearing most often when using your walking stick. For example, this could be a pair of trainers or outdoor shoes if you plan to use the walking stick outside. Next:
This measurement will determine what height your walking stick handle should be set at, so make a note of it and have it to hand when browsing for a new walking stick. You will need to check that the height of your chosen walking stick either matches your measurement or falls within the height range of the stick so it can be adjusted to the right height.
Walking sticks may initially seem very straightforward to use, but there are best practices for how you should use one to get the most out of it.
How you use your walking stick depends on whether you are using one or two walking sticks.
If you are using one walking stick: you need to hold it on the same side as your stronger leg and move it when your weaker leg moves. For example, if your right leg is the weaker leg you will need to hold your walking stick in your left hand, you’ll then move the walking stick when your right leg moves.
If you are using two walking sticks: you have two options here.
If you’re using your walking stick for balance, you should make sure to hold your stick in your most comfortable hand. Always move the walking stick forward first and then your opposite leg, so if you had your walking stick in your left hand, you would move the stick forward and then move your right leg.
Don’t place your walking stick too far in front of you or too far out to the side – it won’t give you the support you need if you do this.
Remember: do not carry your stick in the air – this is unsafe and may leave you at risk of falling.
It can be easy for minor damage to go unnoticed and become a big problem, so to keep yourself safe make sure to regularly check your walking stick to make sure it’s not bent or damaged or has any cracks at the joints.
If you have had an accident or fall, you must inspect your walking stick for damage before using it again.
Don’t forget about the ferrule on the end either. Check it regularly to see if it’s worn smooth or split and needs replacing – you can find spare ferrules here.
Does your walking stick have spring clips or horseshoe clips? Double check that they’re not loose or worn before using your walking stick.
