Not every home is as accessible as it could be, making it hard for those living with illness, injury, or disability to go about their day. While there are ways to adapt a home to help improve the accessibility, this isn’t always possible in every type of house.
Such as listed properties, for example. Listed properties have a variety of rules around what can and can’t be changed, making adapting them to be more accessible an incredibly difficult challenge.
Chris and Laura live in a beautiful, grade II listed farmhouse with their four children. Their eldest son, Brooklyn, has cerebral palsy and autism and uses a wheelchair to get around – a surprisingly difficult task in their current home.
We’re following their journey as they move from their farmhouse to a new home, one that’s being designed to properly accommodate Brooklyn’s needs and that of the rest of their family. With each episode you’ll get an insight as to what can be involved in projects like these, from the financial side to consultations with the experts, to make a family home that works for all of them.
In this first episode, Chris and Laura take us round their farmhouse, describing their current struggles with helping Brooklyn get around at home, and why they aren’t able to adapt their existing home to meet their family’s needs.
